Which part of my body is the thyroid gland?

The thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland found at the base of the neck, just below the adam’s apple.(Larnyx) The thyroid gland is part of a system called the Endocrine system. The thyroid gland plays a major role in the way the body functions and operates. It does this by producing certain hormones that regulate the way every single cell in the body operates. The thyroid gland produces and regulates its hormones according to your body;s needs. If your body is under stress due to illness , pregnancy or immune vulnerability, the thyroid gland produces more hormones enough to respond to these needs. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolism, growth and development. It plays a role in controlling heart, muscle and digestive function, brain development and bone maintenance as well as the body’s temperature. All of the cells in your body need energy to function.

When your thyroid is not working properly, it affects and impacts your entire bodily functions.

The Endocrine System

The Endocrine system is also known as the “Hormonal system”. The word Hormone comes from the Greek word “horma” which means to excite, to trigger or to stimulate. Therefore the endocrine system is a system made up of all organs in body that produce chemicals/hormones that trigger and stimulate the body to perform certain functions. The thyroid gland is part of this system. All these organs work harmoniously to meet your body’s requirements on a need-to-need basis. The endocrine system is basically about communication. There are two main communication pathways in your body; The nervous system and the Endocrine system. In the nervous system, signals travel very fast, and lead to almost instant responses. In the endocrine system on the other hand, chemicals/hormones travel through your body slowly but surely creating a slow response but with a long-lasting effect that impacts the way you live, function, your mood and overall well-being.
